When, in the 1906th year, a car with the factory name “40/50 HP” entered the London-Glasgow highway to pass a serious test, its creators did not suspect the success that their brainchild would bring to them, and the company founded just two years before these events will reach a real triumph. This is later, at the end of the route of more than 24 thousand kilometers, and 48 days long, journalists will give the car a “silver ghost” to the car. The nickname was unusual, but well -aimed, as it characterized the model very accurately. “Silver” – the color of the car, including not only the body and wheeled knitting needles, but even accessories. “Spirit” – because a car with an amazingly small noise worked. The engine at Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost worked so quietly that the English coin laid on its hood with a wound motor did not fall from it. At that time it was real mysticism, because then cars roared like tanks. The speed of acceleration of the car reached 120 km/h, which was also very not bad for the beginning of the 20th century.
The roads in those days were very different from the current autobahns, rather they were off -road. But for Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, a poor-quality road surface was a real trifle: the car even set a new world record, having drove twice as much as the previous achievement of 11,300 kilometers without stopping. When the test came to an end, the car was waiting for a technical examination of the English royal car club. For 1906, the certificate of this commission was very significant, and the positive result issued by her would be the best advertising. The result of the commission – one malfunction was discovered, jamming the gasoline tap. It was a real splash. Almost silent, shining in the sun, a lacquered car was also the most reliable. The success of the model was ensured. And the number of Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost in 6173 copies in Britain and 1703 units in the United States is the brightest example of the popularity of the car.
As for the technical characteristics of the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, they are as follows: a six-cylinder power plant with a volume of 7 liters and a power of 48 horsepower was installed on the classic chassis. The diameter of the cylinder was 114 millimeters, the compression degree of 3.2. The motor was equipped with a double carburetor and was distinguished by an original from a design point of view by a seven -pound crankshaft. There were two candles in each cylinder. The brake system was installed on the front wheels. The weight of the chassis was 1.2 tons.
It is interesting that the first car of this series, the same winner of the London-Glasgow, with the old license plate of the AX-201, has been in service for more than 100 years and continues to take part in competitions.
