UK stock market: what is the development and prospects

UK equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the Mining, Metals & Extraction and Medical Equipment & Services sectors led shares higher.

At the close in London, the Investing.com UK 100 gained 0.55%.

The best performers of the day on the Investing.com UK 100 were Fresnillo PLC (LON:FRES), which rose 7.37% or 68.00 points to trade at 991.00 at the close. Tesco PLC (LON:TSCO) was up 4.16% or 13.10 points to end at 327.70. ConvaTec Group PLC (LON:CTEC) was up 3.95% or 9.40 points to trade at 247.60 at the close.

The biggest decliners were Smurfit WestRock PLC (LON:SWR), which fell 138.00 points (4.41%) to close at 2,993.00. BP PLC (LON:BP) rose 9.90 points (2.90%) to close at 331.70, while Pershing Square Holdings Ltd (LON:PSHP) fell 70.00 points (2.06%) to close at 3,332.00.

On the London Stock Exchange, the number of shares that rose in price (890) outnumbered those that closed in the red (859), while 614 shares remained virtually unchanged.

Fresnillo PLC (LON:FRES) rose to a 3-year high, up 7.37% or 68.00 points to settle at 991.00. BP PLC (LON:BP) fell to a 3-year low, down 2.90% or 9.90 points to settle at 331.70.

Gold futures for June delivery added 2.63% or 83.69 to settle at $3,261.19 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, WTI crude oil futures for May delivery rose 0.98% or 0.59 to settle at $60.66 a barrel. Brent crude futures for June delivery rose 0.92%, or 0.58, to $63.91 a barrel.
