The UK government is going to tighten the law restricting the distribution of illegal content on the Internet in connection with the unrest in the country, CNBC reports, citing industry sources.
The Internet Safety Act was passed in the UK in October 2023, according to which companies are legally obliged to remove illegal content and ensure compliance with agreements concluded with users. In case of failure to comply, companies can be fined by the media regulator Ofcom, and executives can face prison.
Discussions about a possible revision of the law are taking place against the backdrop of statements about unrest in the UK made by American entrepreneur Elon Musk. Earlier, Musk wrote on the social network X under one of the videos from the protests in British cities: “Civil war is inevitable.” Later, a representative of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that Musk’s comments, predicting a civil war in the UK, have no basis.
